how do you get the steering column apart to get to the starter switch on an 82 chevy pickup?

Usually on a GM, the switch itself is under the column near the brake pedal. It is built into the neutral safety switch. A rod runs up from it to the key.

now if you mean the lock cyl. we need to know tilt or non tilt

X3..... it might be bolted to the column by 2 bolts/screws...... mark the switch's position before you remove them, it helps getting it back in the right spot when re-installing
