Post Starter wires

My '56 Chevy starter started acting funny so I checked the wires and noticed the two leads going to the starter were not in the best of condition so I tracted them back to the ignition switch and the other to the ididit light. I looked checked an electrical book that notes that the heavier gage wire connected to the battery post on the starter calls for a 10 gage, the other calls for a 16 ga. But the existing heavier gage looks to be about a 12 ga and the lighter ga. looks to be about a 14 ga. My question, "Should I use the 10 ga. and 16 ga. as per the electrical book or should I replace it like the existing, 12 & 14 ga.? Just curious.

Just my 2 cents worth, but I would replace the 12 gauge with the 10 gauge it calls for. I would replace the 14 gauge wire with more 14 gauge wire. A little to big is always better than a little too small when it comes to wiring.
