starter wiring

I just put a chevy 350 in my 1978 firebird and tried to connect the starter but can't get it to work. The starter worked fine before i pulled the engine. The are 3 wires: one is directly from the battery and I have it on the biggest terminal and it has a little notch that fits together so that's in the right place. Then there's a smaller red wire that i'm not sure where it goes so i have it on the same terminal as the wire from the batt. Then there's a really small one that only fits on the smallest terminal. I'm thinking the medium sized red one is in the wrong place.
