Starting Out Small

I am planning on putting a fairly simple electrical system into a friends gokart with him. We want to run some lights and the engine has a 5 amp alternator on it as well as electric start. Anybody who could give me some help on drawing up the schematics for this, or give me some pointers. I think this would be a good first project for learning to wire, and design harnesses.

Thanks

Well number one i guess, do you think I will need to use a starter solenoid, and number two, do you think an alternator that small will have a voltage regulator built in? We want a couple of big lights, maybe 55W, and a couple smaller clearance lights. This is a competition style gokart for offroad use.

The most confusing part is that of the starter and charging circuit, which I am not very familiar with.

Also we want to run a fuel pump in there.

What kind of battery would you recommend, considering we want to keep weight down, a motorcycle, or small plane battery maybe?

Thanks

Doc here,

Need to know a little more about your project first,

What engine is this? Magneto type Ignition or Electronic? Starter / alternator, or Alternator with system Diode (like an old Honda)

It would be good and very helpful if you could snap a few photos of it and post them here , as well as any "Extras " you can think of..

I have a Schematic maker, but I need to know what it is I dealing with before drawing anything.

This is just a 12 HP job. Its an offroad gokart 1 seater, and he wants to use it in some rally type competition. I cant get any pictures of the actual thing, because at this point he doest have the engine. He is going to have it soon though. I found some pictures of it on the web. Here is its product number OHSK120.

Like I said before its got a 5 amp alternator, that comes with the engine. Its also got its own electric start. Which I have included a picture of the starter.
