Starting Problem

Almost don't know where to begin...'34 Ford with GM 350, IROC TPI, GM steering column, Taylor wiring harness, new starter, new Diehard, new ignition switch, Lokar with new NSS properly adjusted, main battery disconnect switch, and everything works well...sometimes. Intermittently, the starter will not turn nor does the solenoid "click". After initially starting, either one time or multiple times during a trip, it becomes inoperative and will only start if jumped from another car. There is a light installed on the dash which indicates a malfunction with the ECU on start-up so the drill is to restart. Can a bad ECU cause a starting interrupt problem? Alternatively, could there be an intermittent ground such that when "jumped" the ground is restored for restart? The ammeter shows +13 volts when running and there is no indication of a weak battery. A respected streetrod builder has tried to diagnose but we are stumped and appeal to more knowledgeable minds. Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide.

Doc here,

I doubt anything on the ECU will lockout the starter from engaging IF you don't have a VATS system..

When this happens, have you tried jumping the "s" terminal to the big bolt on the solenoid? if it cranks ,it will eliminate the starter as a suspect..

The Starter (even new) can have a flat spot on the armature causing this OR the solenoid Pickup shoe may be pitted and intermittent..

Is the starter the ONLY thing malfunctioning ? or are other things dropping out too? it could be a loose fuse link..

Don't overlook the possibility the the Ignition switch may be broken inside..on the start terminal.

Do a comp;et wire harness inspection, make sure all are tight and plugs are fully seated..and you have a proper ground buss system.
