starting problem

I have a 1992 firbird and its been running fine I try to take care of it as much as my money allows..I parked it and when I went to go turned it on it wouldn't start at all. My car hcranks over but won't start up... it has done this b4 and it was the coil well when I opened the hood the coil was smoking. I thought it just went bad but when I replaced it. It still wouldn't start and when I touched the coil it felt like it was starting to heat up bad. Any tips or sugestions would be apriciated.

Check the ground wire to the cable, check the engine ground to frame/body ground. Obviously you have a bad ground some where if the coil is getting smokin hot.

It sounds like a bad ignition module or a wire from the coil to the module pinched or melted and shorted to ground.
The coil should not have a path to ground until the crank signal turns it on and off. If it is heating up then it is grounded somewhere and staying on will heat it up. I would look the wiring over real good.If you find nothing , suspect the module. But check the wiring first and be thorough, you dont want to spend 75 bucks on a module if you dont need it.Use it for gas

Well I found out what was wrong wit the car the a wire from my tachometer was grounding out...it ran fine but then my car turnd off while it was running ...it wouldn't turn on...I let it sit for 3 days and it turnd on when I went to try and turn it on. I don't want to take it out for the fear of it turning off on me again wat could be wrong wit it?

You probably have a wire who's insulation has worn through over time, you stated the tach has shorted out......
