Question starting problem ???

alright im not so familiar with fuel injected cars, but my brother has an 89 Jeep Wagoneer Limited 4X4 with an in-line 6, its just like the Jeep Cherokees. When we finally get it started it'll either run for several minutes then die, or it'll run long enough to where we can get where we need to be, then when we turn it off it wont start again for quite a while. Im not sure what else to do, the spark plugs, fuel filter, fuel pump, water pump, radiator, and im not sure what its name is but goes on the throttle body and i think it has something to do with the idle have all been replaced and they also changed the oil (???). I figured it has something to do with the ignition, but when i tried to crank it up it wouldnt turn over and the starter sounded fine. im out of ideas except for that it might be the computer or something else having to deal with the ignition.

thanks,
classic

Can you explain when you say...."the starter sounded fine, but it didn't turn over"...

I'm just wondering about the not turning thingy, you meant didn't puff at all when cranking right? Or do you really mean the starter clicks, but the engine doesn't even turn at all?

Can you here the fuel pump run for a few seconds when you trun the key on. If so does it sound like it is working very hard. You may have a bad fuel pump, fuel filter in the tank, or bad in line fuel filter. If you can't hear the pump, it may be bad or possibly fuel pump relay.

T.P.S.

Throttle position sensor.

Is that what you were thinking of? Try replacing the O2 sensor aswell. Check the MAS. Also check for codes as too what is wrong, this should have been your first step with computer controlled cars.

I don't know why, but I would check the batterie for 14.4V at the terminals, and also make sure the charging system works at the same voltage when the engine is running, dont know why, but It seems batterie related somehow to me, and since you mentionned it was low and you had to recharge it. I know for a fact that a Shorted batterie will actually Suck-in as much current as given thus, even if your charging system is good, but your batterie is shorted, you'll have a drainage at the terminals while you drive and thus, after a few minutes of driving, the batterie won't be charged enough to start it again. But if you leave it there sitting for a while, it gets back up a bit, and then you can start it...I would check the voltages just to make sure and take that out of the equation...and also check em just after you drove it, to see if its lower, then that means you have a short somewhere...

Hope this helps.

Neutral/Park Switch....maybe...?

check the distributor. There should be three wires, About 5 volts going in and 5 volts should be coming out when cranking it. If you got power going in but not coming out its the module in the distributor. Ive seen them go bad on many chrysler products and just did one a 4 cyl wrangler last month. Other wise, if it has an ignition module seperately than thats prolly it. They would intermittently shut down a vehicle or run good for a while then stop. The vehilce would even be running fine up till it just shuts down

There's a bright red three of four line warning at the top of threads older than 100 days, you must have missed that.
