Starting Problems 1995 Chevy Astro 2WD

Hi guys!

My Chevy Astro wonīt start at all. The battery is completely new, itīs got 13.35V. The starter cranks the engine easily. Itīs got a good spark too.

As soon as I jump start it, it fires up immediately, no matter if the engine is cold or warm.

Hope someone can help me!

where are you grounding to when you jumpstart the vehicle?

If it spins over but won`t start when you try and crank it and it has spark then that kind of suggests the alternator has went south. Most of the newer GM vehicles with OBD II without the alternator won`t start and if they do they won`t run long.

hmm interesting never knew that about the alt and OBD II

didnt make any sense that it cranks over fine and has spark and will run if jumped only

just never seen or come across this one before, i dont believe hmm..

I connected the ground directly on the engine, as well as on the battery-terminal.

When I use normal diameter jumper-cables it doesnīt fire up eighter. When I use truck cables with a bigger diameter, it workes fine.

So you believe it is the alternator. What can be the reason, the car kills alternators. Itīs the 3rd alt within 1 year...

We used to have a 86 buick park avanue that ate alternators, why was because we ran the radio alot without the engine running. What would happen is the radio would put a slight drain on the battery so when the car was started the alternator would go into full charge mode until it burned itself up. Other times it just depends on where you get the alternator. We went through 4 at advance auto parts until we got one that lasted over a month.
My dad`s 98 GMC will start without the alternator, but it won`t stay running 10 seconds there after, or if you start it and remove the battery cable it goes dead on the spot. computer vehicles take alot of juice to run being they have far more electrical accessories to operate. before the computer days to find a 55 amp alternator was common, now it`s common to find over 100 amp alternators. Have the alternator checked, if it checks out okay you`ll know the problem lies elsewhere. Yeah some haven`t heard of the alternator having a effect on it, but I can`t swear it applies to all vehicles, I only know it deals with some from personal experience. If the alternator is putting out no juice and the battery has enough to turn it over doesn`t mean it has enough to operate the rest of the system. When you jump start a already hot battery your increasing the power to likely enough to make the vehicle run.

There is a certain voltage level required for the systems to run. Most modern vehicles start to shut down non critical systems if the voltage gets to low, like abs a/c and other non critical items to give you more "limp home time"
The fact that you can jump it and it runs suggests either your new battery is no good or you have a bad connection that the jumpers are somehow, helping to connect.
Once it starts will it stay running without the jumper cables on it.
You say the battery has 13.5, I am going to guess that is at rest, if so it means nothing . What is the voltage while cranking. Most vehicles will not fire if the cranking voltage falls below 10.5 or so.
What is the running voltage at the battery. If it is in the 14 range your alternator is most likely working but is not a conclusive indication.

I agree that the most likely problem is a voltage drop (probably in the main battery cables) as noted by others. Just one other thing to think about, however. Your EFI system uses an oil pressure switch on the engine to run the electric fuel pump in the tank. There is a separate fuel pump relay controlled by the computer that activates the pump for about two seconds when the ignition switch is first turned on. If the relay goes bad, the fuel pump won't turn on until the engine is cranked enough to build up oil pressure. Next time, turn the key to run and listen at the fuel filler for the two second fuel pump noise. If it's working, ignore everything I just said, but if not, check the relay. You should also put a fuel pressure gauge on the test port and check for pressure while cranking.
