I have a '31 coupe and two '32 Confederate's. After I tore into the '31 steering gear box I realized that they were good for their era but certainly not for anything more than they did when new. I replaced all three and boxed the inner rail and mounted the box on the inside (I have inline sixes) and fabricated other attachments but I did use Borgeson universals and frame to column supports and have had no problems to date. I certainly would be careful with the Heim type bearings. They are very good but then take a look at the torque produced when the front wheels cross bumps or rough roads. Larger tires and wheels really increase the strain on the steering components.
