The way my Dad taught me on my 54 was: Loosen the lock nut, and while someone is gently working the play back and forth, slowly turn the adjuster in till it is seated. And re tighten the lock nut.

On some of the '60's and '70's boxes, GM in particular, there is a 'high' spot so to speak, you can feel when the worm gear is centered, you would want to make the adjustment there, and only lightly seated, you could damage the roller balls otherwise. Repair manuals should have the procedure for your car.

I always turn the wheels either to the left or right when I make the adjustment...because the worm has more wear in the center...this way you will not get it too tight. Loosen the jam nut and turn the adjuster in untill you feel it make contact then back of just a little and tighten your jam nut while holding the adjuster.

I have an original factory manual for 49-51 ford trucks.

I scanned the page you want.

Here is a link to the page with a bigger scanned image.

Just click on the picture and it should get bigger.

Hope this helps,
