Steering column

My first rodding effort, on a budget, and can't find similar info in FAQ or recent threads that are current.

Can any of you tell me today's best choices for a steering column in a '47 Chevy p/u. Truck will have IFS/wmanual rack. I plan to swap a 350 TBI and 700R4 from '87 Silverado; tried to find a column in a local yard, but no cars there older than '95. Looks like connectors on GM columns they have are different from what is on the '87.

I want tilt/wtelescope if possible, column shift with turn signals and wiper stalk and emergency flasher, but don't know what options were available on what vehicle, or even if TBI had any effect on steering column.

Is '87 chevy p/u only (looks like it would fit) /best choice for easiest use, if not.....
What are connector types or model years for easier ID when asking? Searching for wiring diagram of the '87 p/u in case of need to integrate connectors. Knowing what to look for, would simplify search in yards even in NH that still have older vehicles and parts. Also looking for hints on TBI computer and harness extraction, or best to buy aftermarket? I don't want to pull it apart until I am ready to pull the engine. Any of your knowledge and ideas would sure be a big help.

I use GMC/Chevrolet van tilt columns ... but they do not have the telescoping feature.

The newer ones ( like shown ) do not sell for much money on eBay ... this one is less than $25 with 10 hours to go.

I like the looks of the 69-73 Chevy pickup. It has a smaller housing and fits the look of the 47. The van columns I've checked will not tilt up enough. They are made to go in at less of an angle.

steering column

Thanks, Jack and Deuce, I stopped in a yard a few miles away, but it looked to me like they are going out of the business. They had one that looked like it could be made to work, in an '84 blazer, but no key or ignition lock cylinder, they wanted $50 and I would have to take it out.

I hope to try a few more next week. Truck had a harness in it when I bought it, but not sure whos or set up for what, but guess I can make it or something else work once I know what the column is and what else I decide to run in it, so the column is the issue for now.

Thanks again.

Ted
