Post steering column ignition broke

went to move the coupe has a gm tilt column, turned the key nothing, acts like something came unhooked or not engaging, the bezel does lock without key in,the steering won't lock, the rod that goes down to ignition switch itself doesn't move, took apart down past turn signal, thought I better quit, will a new key tumbler fix or replace whole column if thats the case I'll bypass to another switch, thanks for anyhelp <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Zonk,Don't make the tear down such a big deal it's not that bad. You are going to have to take it apart to see what broke but all the parts are available from Chev dealer. same parts for years. The hardest part is removing the 2 side pins the hold the tilt together. Mitchell manuals at you favorite garage will have the break down instruction and picture. I have rebuilt and shortened many GM columns. Most probable in your case is the aluminum ratchet assy that connects to the key and tumbler. Ray
