Steering column problem?

My son bought a Total Cost M2 front end for his 53 chevy 210 it has a standard rack setup on it. What I want to do is use a older steering column with a factory shift indicator (automatic) on it. that I can hook up to his 700-R4 trans as he doesn't want a floor shifter.

Has anyone done this and if so what kind (make/model/year) did you use and how did you modify it to work? Money is tight on this build and after market columns are out of this world, price wise!

Let me know if you can help me out with this problem?

Thanks,
KJ

I welded a fabbed bracket on the end of my stock tree shifter rod on my 49 p/u, then used a cable from an olds toronado down to my 700-r. I know it's as simple as using a rod to hookup, but it IS different. My point is you can be creative without spending $$. I have 22.00 wrapped up in my shifter conversion and it's pretty cool for my taste.

Well the cable failed, so now I have rods and bell crank like it's supposed to be. k.i.s.s.! Sure works good. Now it is time to put in new t. converter!
