I have 72 chevy pickup with tilt automatic and the plastic shift indicator pointer broke off in the column. I have taken the steering wheel off and have tried to remove the turn signal mechanisim out after removing the three screws, but nothing seems to help in removing it or anything else in order to get to the broken pointer. Any help would be appreciated.

Need to remove the little phillips screw holding the Hazard Flasher knob on.
I think it is necessary to disconnect the battery and depress the hazards befor the switch will come out.

The battery was disconnected before I started. The hazard button has been removed and depressed all the way in. One other thing that a mechanic friend thought, was that the jacket surrounding these parts should slide off, but we could not get it to move.

You need to drop the column down from the dash. There is a connector for the turn signal wiring harness disconnect this. There might be a plastic cover on the harness this is easily removed. Then shove the wiring up the column, this will help you remove the turn signal mechanism.

It does "slide" off. I'm sure 35 years of corrosion aren't any help. At any rate I think I was able to somehow remove the turn signal stuff before sliding that cover off...but you will need to remove it at some point. I used the holes for the blinker and hazard flasher to get something in there to pound on gently.
