steering control valve loose

"55 T Bird has power steering system with the control valve on the steering armn and a cylinder attached also to the steering arm. Problem is.... I can't get the play out of the control valve, even with the adjusting nut fully tightened. The control rod , valve assy and ball and socket are all 1 peice, so 'ball' also moves back and forth. See the picture the screwdriver is pointing the area thats' loose...................thanks

The control valve is supposed to have play im the ball, that is how it works. It is spring loaded, and as the ball moves side to side slightly in the control head,it opens the valve to push the wheels one way or the other, until the ball is centered again by the springs. If you do manage to get the play out, when the engine starts, the steering wheel will turn all the way to the right, and stay there. I learned the hard way.

OK, I see in the book now, the play is supposed to be there , BUT when it was all toghter, when you wiggle the steering wheel, there is the same a mount of play before it moves the arm . Resulting in LOOSE STEERING ????????????
....the play, is in the whole shaft, which is also at the ball, before it contacts the springs
