steering noise question

Hey guys, this isn't a hotrod, far from it...a 95 saturn sl, no power steering. The problem is that when making a right turn of any kind, there is a strange noise, not a grind or a click, but it is like a clearance noise. It started happening about a week ago, it has become progressively worse, it used to only happen on real hard turns, now it doesn't matter what type of turn. THe noise intensifies the long the car is driving. It's my girlfriends car, so I probably don't have all the info, just what she's told me. No recent collisions or problems, alignment 10,000mi ago. I've heard it a few times, but it isn't a CV click. Real strange....any ideas. Thanks, Adam

Do you mean "clearance noise" like a whooshing sound?

it's more of a bearing type squeel. I haven't checked the bearings cause I don't have my tools, but the noise comes from the inside half of the axle. The boots look clean and aren't torn. Happens at higher speeds and only on one side. Thanks, Adam

Likely the wheel bearing and the noise is traveling.

Possible the carrier bearing or a side gear in the trans, but less likely. Saturns are fairly common for needing the wheel bearing once they get a lot of miles on them.

If the wheel bearing is loose you can be fairly sure that is it. If it has more than 100,000 miles, it is also likely, esp if it has ever had a halfshaft replaced. Look for rust colored powder around the bearing if it is not loose.

CVs dont usually make a bearing type noise.
