Steering shaft clearances

Hi everyone,

I am mocking up the steering shaft in the engine compartment now using Borgeson U-joints & shafts. What is the general recommendations for clearance between the shaft/u-joints & any frame or engine components ? Also, these are stainless steel products, so will they blue or discolor any if they are close to the headers ? Any additional clearance for the shaft to the headers ?

Thanks,
Mike.

Mike, a lot will depend on your motor mounts. As you can see here, clearance between the shaft and header pipes are around 3/8". But, I also have urethane mounts that move very little. The car has since been finished and the shaft has been coated with standard grade automotive paint. There is no sign of any discoloration or burning, but that could also be affected by the header coating...

Russ,

Thanks a bunch for your comments. I also have polyurethane mounts, so will shoot for 3/8 min around the engine area.
