steering is toooooo quick

I have to slow down the over responsive steering in my 1951 chevy p/u. I have a Mustang II with a power rack----general motors power steering pump. It is extremely quick and to the point that one could put this vehicle in the ditch if they were not careful. Is there a way to slow this quick steering down?

As far as I know the pressure from a GM pump is to high... You have to fix the pressure I want to say they sell the right valve to fix it....

Another thing to check is you Caster... To see what they have it set at...

The first thing I would do is fix the pump...I think someone will post what to do with it.... I never ran much power steering on my hot rods... Just heard a few people talking about it.. Good luck..

Borgeson makes a Pressure Reduction Kit for the GM pump. It's under $20 and will solve your problem.

Correcting the "Twitch"

The problem you are encountering is called a "twitch". Too much VOLUME! Mustang rack uses 2 GPM where as a GM p/s pump generates 3-3.7 GPM. I just changed my FLOW CONTROL VALVE out. It will change the rate from 3 GPM to the 2 GPM needed. Speedway Motors has the best price I have found. Less than $20 plus shipping. They screw into the back of the power steering pump and the pressure line screws into it. Easy as pie! Verify with www.GOTTASHOW.com products. They offer the same valve w/explanation. Good luck.

I have operated two street rods with MII power racks with GM pumps for over a hundred thousand miles and have not experienced your problem. I did use a kit in one of the pumps when I rebuilt the truck and it made it quieter, but could tell very little difference in performance. When you do modify your pump and find it is still overreactive, set your toe in to the max MII specs and your problem should be solved.
