You will be hard pressed to find anyone making a U joint with a 5/8 round plain end...It is generally considered too small for street use.
You could possibly bore out the end of a 9/16 splined U joint to 5/8...but I would NOT recommend doing that...Read on. Flaming River, Unisteer and Sweet are other manufacturers of steering U joints. Sweet U joints are lighter duty than Borgeson, Flaming River or unisteer, but you can look at those on the Speedway motors website. They all supply U joints with different sizes on the ends. I like the Unisteer U joints because they are the only ones with a pinch type attachment system, (like many OEMs), where as the others use setscrews. The pinch bolt is set into the bore of the joint somewhat,(as OEMs do it), and requires a groove in the shaft, so it is mechanically retained, as well as tightened around the shaft. You should really consider using 3/4" DD shafts, as they don't need to be welded up like the plain round shafts. Pins and setscrews by themselves are not really that good of a way to secure a steering U joint to a shaft, and welding can damage the bearings in a u joint . Hope this helps, Mikey

steering u joints.........
i just adapted my mustang 2 power steering to my firebird column. i ordered the u joint from speedway, and a section of 3/4 in double d shaft. i installed the u joint into the mustang 2,then then put the shaft into the u joint,i measured it,and cut the shaft 1/8 in short. then i had a piece of chrome moly tube that was a really good fit on both shafts. i drilled 2 holes 3/16 in top of tube, and 2 holes in bottom of tube.i reinstalled tube onto both shafts, then drilled both shafts with a 3/16 bit.about 3/16 in deep. then took tube off,and drilled and tapped tube for 3/16 s/s set screws 3/8 in long.reinstalled tube, put set screws in,then used lock washers on set screws and lock nuts. NO PLAY in shaft.the set screws go into both shafts, about 3/16 deep...now,if i have to remove shafts for some reason,i take set screws out, slide tube down shaft and remove shaft without a big hassle.
