reducing your steering wheel
I just built a 1938 chevrolet coupe. The original banjo steering wheel measured in at a truck like diameter of 17". I bought a 1974 Firebird steering wheel with a diameter of 15", then cut my old large rim off and laid the center banjo section on top of the firebird rim. The Firebird rim has a stiff rubber injected cover over the internal steel rim. I cut away enough of the rubber to expose the steel ring, and then using my cutoff wheel I cut deep slots in the rims so that the spokes fit in at correct spacing. I then mig welded across these three areas with four nice passes to secure it all together, then melted rubber to fill in the gaps that remained. My upholsterer then covered the wheel with leather. Original banjo wheel with a modern diameter and feel. Works and looks perfect!
