Steering Wheel Refinish

I did a search here and on the interior section. I am not sure if this is the right place for this, but with all the paint experts here I thought that I would check here first.

I have a stock steering wheel from a 66 bronco that I need to fix. It feels like a real hard rubber. I have fixed the crack with POR epoxy putty and I am not wanting to paint it.

Should I epoxy prime it or use some Vari-Prime self etch primer. Also what topcoat. I got some SEM for plastic or can I just paint it with some single stage urethane.

I first tried to rattle can paint it with fusion paint w/o primer and it did not like that at all.

Any help would be appreciated.

I would use a "vinyl" paint. You can get either rattle can or for a real paint gun. I would venture to say the real paint gun stuff would last longer on a steering wheel. Just make sure you use a very good viynl cleaner to prep with and you should consider using an adhesion promter as well.
