Use a depth mike to see if you need standard or shallow ring groove. Or measure the original ring. Tell your parts man the dimensions. Beware, there is also a Metric ring set used in later model Chevys.

Can you take the alternator and have it checked somewhere? Also, does it drain the battery just sitting? If so you definitely have a drain somewhere. When you stated you were starting it 3 or 4 times and then it is dead,is that just starting and running? or are you able to cruise it. Just starting it and running it should not do that. Is the belt in good shape. I know that is simple, but sometimes it is the simple things that cause the gremlins. When you unhook the battery from the positive side does it arc? That is a sure sign of something drawing current.

More than once, I have seen a slipping belt cause this type of problem.
Also, your wiring is 40 years old, maybe a lot of the current is being lost in those old wires and not getting back to the battery. What is the voltage at the battery with the engine running?

Yes I am able to drive it.But then when I **** the car off and drive it again it will only start 1 more time after that and then die.I thought it was dying over night while it was sitting. But I let it sit for 3 days straight and it started right up.I went back out later that day and it turned over but then it dies out.The belts are all brand new.So is the battery and Alt.I cannot figure it out.
