stinky oil

Hey guys i just bought a motor from a guy on ebay. It seemed like a pretty good motor when i was talking to the guy and from all the reciepts he provided me in a file "just for this motor". But with it being on ebay, i didn't really get to physically inspect everything the way i would have liked to. I went to pick it up, and it was already paid for at this time through paypal, so there was no turning back. When i pulled the dip stick out it really had a strong gas odor to the oil. The guy swears the motor is good and he only changed it because he won a 572 bbc crate motor at a car show. He says the motor only has about 24 hours run time on it. what different things could cause this smell.

extended crank, blow by, rings not sealing, carb flooding, take your pick. I would get a test done on the oil. You can pick up a tester from NAPA, or your local International truck dealer. It is a sealable cup, basically a piss sample from your engine. They send it in to get analized. All for $20. ^They give you a printout with comments. It will tell you everything from what brand oil to how much bearing metal is in the engine.

"oil smells of gas" + "only 24 hours on it" = retorque the intake manifold

Possible ruptured mechanical fuel pump if one was run on it. If gas continues to get into the oil, it will wear the rings out very quickly and the engine will need a rebuild. Also possible due to blowby as mentioned and no PCV system.
