It's not the converter, it is internal to the trans or a linkage problem. If the converter is locked, it will behave like a manual trans put into gear without the clutch - a hard slam that either kills the engine or the car starts moving in the direction of the gear that is selected by the shifter - forward or reverse.
As gear choice is selected in the trans, it can't be in the converter, all the converter does is supply power into the trans, it is the tranny's job to direct it to forward or reverse.
Sounds like a clutch problem to me.
