Stock 350; What can I do on a budget?

I have an early 70's 350 block with matching pistons and crank which are all stock except for the cam, which is a Comp Cams Xtreme Energy 262. The heads were taken from an early 90's small block and are the center bolt style but I am not too sure on their exact specs. The intake is an aluminum Edelbrock Victor Jr and is topped with a plain jane quadrajet. What are some simple power producing changes I could make to squeeze a few more horse power out of the engine without spending a fortune? I have been told the centerbolt heads suck and so I was thinking about upgrading the heads but could I get away with leaving the stock crank and pistons in it? Someday I want to do it right and make it a 383 stroker but that won't be for a couple years or so. What does everyone think?

Remove a valve cover and check the casting number on the heads. Or look in the intake port for a swirl vane.
The "TBI" swirl port heads have very limited hi performance potential with the big flow restricting swirl vane in the intake port. 191-193 castings

the "TPI"-/ "285 hp" "300HP" crate motor heads aren't too bad
187-083-081(305) respond very well to porting 58 and 64cc chambers

The only other heads that had the centerbolt valve covers are vortecs
L-31 350 062 906 (very good power) 305 vortec "059" (not as good)

If you have the swirl port heads, there are lots of good budget head swap choices to go with for better power.

The racing single plane intake manifold and mild 262 cam are a bit of a mis match for each other.
What is this motor going in and how will you be using it?

Is this an assembled motor or a bunch of parts that need freshening-rebuilding and assembly?
Flat top or dished pistons? What else do you have kicking about (heads etc)?
