guys i'm trying to build a decent low end torqued 455 on a shoe string and i've had the oppurtunity to pick up a stock olds 455 4 barrel intake for $50.00. it probably wont be as good as a high priced aluminum one but will i be satisfied with the results? also, i've got a fairly new comp .501 cam with 224/224 duration, i'm sure it will install, but will it be a decent setup or not? signed rookie trying to learn :mwink:
You can port match it to the heads and put a carb spacer on it, that should help. BB Olds aftermarket stuff has always been high priced. Ever driven a Cutlass with a stock 455 4 bbl. ? Torque, torque, torque. That sounds like an excellent cam for a 455, it will work well with a stock intake until you can scrounge up an aftermarket manifold. I don't think you will be disappointed. Don't be afraid to build a 200-4R tranny for it. Put that in there with a 3.73 gear and you'll have a real strong runner that won't kill you at the pump. My friend owns a transmission shop and his ace wrench built a 200-4R for a guy running a 455 in an Olds Vista Cruiser wagon. It is street driven and runs in the 12's.
I think you'll be very pleased with the stock intake, I know I am. I just recently got my hands on my first big block (olds 455). It layed a skid about 75 foot long, and that was with a factory quadra-junk carb and a cracked head. Latter that week I placed it in my 1/2 ton chevy and got my Edelbrock 600 (yes you'll a an adapter plate, about $25 at Autozone.) on it and tore into another skid that reached 100ft. But now it's dead and I'm tryin' to get my hands on pair of heads for it.
