stock Chevy 1956 rearend gears
 
I have a stock 56 chev. with th350 trans. and 3.36 gears in rearend. I want to
go with a higher ratio. I have heard that a 3.23 or 3.08 3rd member would fit in my stock rearend housing? Any thoughts or suggestions if these would fit, and where to start looking for one. Craigslist?

Some info that may help you w/locating/ID'ing a different rear end is here. I'm not sure the factory had a 3:23 ratio then. But IMHO a 3:23 ratio will not be enough of a difference to bother with, 3000 rpm would become 2884 rpm by going to the 3:23.

Ya, not much diff. with only 120 rpm lower

Any '55 to '64 full size Chevy or '55 to '62 Corvette chunk will fit in your housing. The '62 to '64 Chevy II had a smaller differential.

Thanks for the info on 55-64 full size 3rd member fitting in my 56 housing.
Do you have an idea of the highest gear ratio that may be avail? Thanks

Have you considered taller tires? or at least borrow a set to see if the gear change makes you happy.Back when I was driving with 5.13s I swapped out L-60-15s for L-78_15s,so I could drive from Vancouver BC,to race at Bremerton.
wish I had overdrive,,,it was a long hall at 3700 rpm

I`m going to try taller tires and see what that does. I have 215.70r15 on and will try 235.75r15 . Wonder what gear ratio change that would be eqivelent to from my 3.36 rear gears .

215/70s are about 27 1/2 tall 235 are over 29,so I bet you will notice,,Note your speedo will not show the new faster speed that you will be going

Look here for a suitable calculator.

I can conform that Chevrolet had that ratio in 1956. I was a GM Tech and all I recall were 3:55 and up to 4:11 with a special order 4"56 ratio. In '58 I stared seeing a few 3:42's and then in '60 a few 3:08's. I'm using 3:08's right now in a T-5 setup behind a really warmed up 216 inline six and am happy with the outcome. I use a 30" high tire.

thanks for your reply, I put on 235/75r15 tires, and will be seeing what that does to my gear ratio. Cobalt sent me a calculator site, and it seems like according to the calculator I will be running around a 3.07 rear ratio.
