stock g body rear end capability!?

Not much more to say haha... basically i have a stock rear end, 86 el camino i think its a 7.5 rear end(hope that sounds right)

whats not stock is a 408 small block that i completely re-built...

my question is, although the rear end has thus far held up to my build(400+ miles) how much further can it be pushed before i rip it apart if i will at all!?


I'll also note im running stock tires right now so the tires just break loose if theres any stress on the rear end... and i do plan on putting another 100+ hp through this motor whether it be forced induction or NOS this upcoming winter

Your definitely going to want to upgrade sooner or later. IMHO
you can get by with what you have "FOR NOW" but if it ever hooks up thing's will give. JMO

So quick story... last summer i put a 355 in my g body.. i put 3.73 gears in the rear. Everyone on this forum said it would break and i thought they were just being overly conservative and I didn't think it would come apart. Beat the piss out of it all summer never had an issue... on my way to a funeral not even beating on the car and the rearend comes apart and im stranded 40 miles from home. Replace the rearend now before it comes apart and leaves you stranded lol... it will. Seems like when things like that happen its never around the corner from your house.. at least thats how it happens to me.

i did a 1980 malibu. 400 small block with a 4 speed. 7.5 inch rear with 3:42 posi.

it lasted about 3 months when i blew it. look at a ford nine inch. i think currie has a bolt in you can get.

looks like im walking in your guys footsteps, unfortunately not the best path to go down haha.... looks like I should start putting extra money in my piggy bank



i was hoping someone out there upgraded their 7.5 and it was working for them, but im not going to be the first to try it

You can upgrade the 7.5" but, by the time you're finished you could've bought a 8.5" or 9" Ford for close to the same price. Stronger Diff & Axles, Gears, Master Install kit & Girdle Cover = $$$
