I got a 350 short block that im gonna just put in an old truck to use to pull my car trailer and im gonna go to the junk yard and just get some stock heads and was wondering which ones I should try and get should I just get some regular heads or get some tbi 350 heads I figured them would be a little better then the old smog heads and please dont say vortecs cause I rarely ever see them at a junk yard and if I do ill get them for something else anyhow

Swirl ports are fine to use but you have to remember a few things. It`ll give it excellant pulling power to about 3500 RPM, around 4000 RPM it falls flat on it`s face. Second thing to remember you`ll need a intake that has the 4 center bolt holes at a different angle. You can drill it out yourself but it won`t look very good there after. The swirl ports also have a 64 - 66cc chamber which will up the compression ratio compared to 76cc smog heads.
Since you`ll be using your truck as a puller then the swirl port heads will work fine.

If you dont mind buying a intake then try to get a set of vortecs possibly? They are better than early cast heads and probably abundant

I have only seen vortec heads at the junkyards I go once and they were cracked and if I did find them I would get them but not for this truck I would save them for a performance build im just wanting something cheap and decent to pull my car trailer

I agree the vortec heads are always gone where i am from. A good cast number is 487,933 for a open chamer head. 882s arent good heads but for a truck they should work fine

487 933 are usually not compatible with no-lead gas.

Swirl ports should work pretty decent for what you're doing, just be sure to snag the correct intake with them, :thumbup:

for a truck... that does a lot of towing... the swirl ports are fine, just be aware that their are small (~58cc) and large chamber(~64cc) chamber versions and if in doubt for something that will see heavy use lower compression will likely make you happier (I still tend to pick higher compression numbers than most and put a lot of effort into detonation control, I'd rather do extra work and get the extra MPG from the higher compression in most cases, but again, you're going to be unhappy if you end up with something that will only deal with a heavy load well on premium).
I have no idea what redeeming quality the 350 TPI heads have, I have at least 2 L98's sitting around and I doubt that I'll ever reuse the heads on them, they're just basically average smog era heads. OTOH, the 416's (used on 80's pre centerbolt performance engines like the L69, LU5 and LB9) and the 602's used on some 80s' 305 trucks and other things are actually probably my favorite traditional style production SBC heads, as long as what I'm building can deal with the small chambers (58 for the 416's, 52 for the 602's, though they both end up between 58-60cc after installing larger valves and some porting).
For the most part, smaller ports, valves, chambers... will make better bottom end and MPG, and the only one that will get you into trouble on a 350 will be if the chambers end up too small/compression too high. Bigger, better flowing stuff will make more power up top but is probably not what you're looking for.
Either way, I'd try to go spread bore 4bb if you're going carb... small primaries = good mpg and responsiveness down low, better than a 2bbl or a square bore, and the larger secondaries give you plenty of flow to make power up top if you want to.

I had a set of 3947040 heads on a '68 327 4-bbl. engine from an Impala. No accessory holes and no double hump. They had a kind of right angle identifier on the ends. 1.94" x 1.5", pressed studs.

I thought the L98 heads had 58cc chambers. the use of these heads would be fine if you can find some. But as mentioned, if your just looking for low end pulling power the swirl ports will work fine.

Sounds like s good place for the use of the L30 305 Vortec engine heads if it won't mess up your compression ratio. Just an idea :)
