Stock HEI vs. Accel

How well does a stock GM HEI distributor w/ the integral coil stack up against the Accel Billetproof distributor with a firewall mountes Accel Super Coil performance-wise? I'm just curious how much of a difference, if any. Thanx.

Likely just a extended spark range in the upper rpm area. power wise, none. IF the Accel unit works, your doin good.

I have not heard anyone have long lasting history with Accel products. We had an Accel dist in my sons truck and it self destructed in about 4 months,,,,out of town of course!

That reminds me, I have a brand new Accel HEI coil in the shop, I need to put it on ebay and make a few bucks! LOL

My days spent training at the sun electric school in late 70's permitted testing on many HEI units. The bone stock GM HEI out performed the accel stuff everytime but I'm sure after 30 plus years accel has probbly improved their technology.

You would be money and performance ahead to install an msd module in your hei.The new ones even come with a built in rev limiter.

The only good experience I've ever had with any Accel product in the past 35 years is their high performance breaker points. But the breaker point distributor days are long past.

A stock GM HEI will give you all the spark power you're likely to need with just the addition of a MSD HEI coil. (don't forget to replace the center post under the coil with a steel one ( MSD) If you just got to have max spark power add the MSD HEI module as well. MSD has two HEI modules. One is for racing. draws more amps, makes more spark power and creates more heat. It is for racing.

The street/strip module falls between the stock GM module and the all out racing module. This module has reasonable amp draw and makes lots and lots of spark power. This is the module you want for your street car.
