stock vw transaxle

hey guys, well i just put my el camino with the mild sbc 400 up for sale but im going to build a 60-72 beetle for street/strip. i was wondering how much the stock transaxle can take before a professional built one or modified one would be needed? also what is a good forum to go to about vw's? thanks

I'm currently rebuilding my sandrail. This time around its getting a turbo and a programmable efi system, and i also replaced the stocksheet metal in the rear engine mounts with DOM.

The stock trans will not hold up very well with any engine mods. There are a few options, a porshe trans is almost a direct bolt in and has 5 speeds, they can be had on ebay for around $100. Aftermarket transmissions built for racing are very expensive $5000.

You are definatly going to bust the 1st gear real quick especially drag racing. You could also buy a aftermarket diff with 4 spider gears for around $100. Or weld the hubs.

Basically the stock trans isn't very good.

try www.cbperformance.com for trans parts and www.chirco.com

thanks, ive found several long block assemblies on ebay from a manufacturer of them for about 2 grand for 180-220hp engines. i think im going to go with the 180hp version. do you know what kink of e.t. a bug could run making this kind of hp? i know theres a lot of other factors like tire size, and gear ratios but just a rough estimate? what kind of porshe trans will work?

I'm not sure about ET's because i haven't drag raced mine, but before the turbo and efi it would wheelie inbetween shifts. The trans from a porsche 901,911 i think will work, just look for one and it looks very similar to the VW trans, the engines also look very the same
