Stored Paint Life

I have a lot of left over paints in pints and quarts that I have used in
the past. These are Base Coat colors by Sherwin Williams and DuPont.
I opened one the other day and it was starting to "gel" or at least
thicken. Is there something I can add to increase shelf life?
Is the stabilizer/reducer recommended for their reduction ok to thin with
for storing or is there something better for long term storage?

If the top is sealed good and paint is not exposed to freezing you should find they will be good for years.

The S&W, you want to make sure that no basemaker goes back into the can as that could cause a gelling problem.

The PPG, if activated you do not want to pour any back in can.

Another thing that will extend the life of the stored paint is not to pour any reduced leftover paint back to avoid pigment kick-out.

If it starts gelling do not try to thin and use.

I have never poured any mixed paint back into the original can,
I figured that's a no-no but had to ask.
But aren't there some common ingrediants
in the base paint that could be added and extend it's life?

Well, kinda sorta!

But if done you risk causing a resin or pigment kick-out witch could render the paint useless sooner than left alone.
