storing a car for the winter and need some ideas

I have a 1973 nova that will be stored this winter, unfortunetly, the car will have to stay outside through out the winter. I don't have enough money to store it some where and I don't have a garage space at home(for parents cars). I need ideas of what the best thing to do for the car so nothing happens to the car for about four months of just sitting around not doing anything.

Thanks for the feedback.

Dan

Whereabouts are you in Illinois? My husband and I are storing a couple of our vehicles this year, too. Possibly, if you are in our general area, I can give you phone numbers to call. The people we are storing our cars with are not expensive at all!

There is a "bubble" you can put your car in so store it. They make a bubble for interior use as well as outdoor useage. Have you checked into one of those?

If you wish, you can PM me and then I can give you the information we have on where to store your vehicle.

Your going to want to treat the gas with gas saver. Rund it through your gas tank for a couple of tank fulls.

You may want to do a good grease job and ensure any and all water is pushed out of the joints.

My dad and my mom use to both park their cars in the garage. I was smart, I started tieing up my dads side of the garage in the spring, but it was nice weather so he didn't mind parking outside. Eventually he got use to parking outside, and now I have taken over his part of the garage.

Thats my project car. In the garage.

I would politely tell your parents to make room, the nova's coming in. See what they say.

Boy, you have some nerve.....................lol

That's about the way I conned my dad too...............only problem, we didn't have a garage.

If storing your car outside, don't cover it with one of those vinyl tarps. Leaves marks on the paint. Better not to cover it at all, than one of those.

You can buy one of those portable garages fairly cheaply.

I live in the northwest suburbs of chicago. Would i have to do anything to the coolant or the oil to protect the motor? I have also heard that if a car sits for a while the tires will get flat spots, if so, is bad if i just but the car on jack stands for the four months? The one problem with storing the car somewhere else is that i would like to sometimes work on the car, do little things to it. If any one else knows anything that would be great. The more information the better.

Thanks for the feedback

Hey Dan...

don't worry about keeping your car outside...no exposed bare metal right?? You do have antifreeze in it right and did you put stable or some other gas preservative in the tank? Your tires may go down a bit but not to worry just put air in them before you drive it in the spring. I put a battery maintainer on the battery keeps the battery charged up and keeps it from freezing. Just run and extension cord out to the car from the garage and charge the battery with a 12 v maintainer charger.
