Strange sound from under truck!!!????

Hello guys, I got a sound coming from under truck, itís like a rattling noise not real loud last about 3-6 seconds at different RPM's. It has no rhythm or consistency. it will do it at idle when I raise rpm to about 2000, then u let off or give it more it stops and same when driving, when it starts I can give it more gas or let off and it stops. I can't find anything loose that could make it. No vibration occurs with it. sounds like a small screw going through a fan. The only other noise that I get is a small vibration between 40-60 mph like a tire noise, but I got new tires and drive shaft looks good.
just got engine and xmission rebuilt, they sound good and can't here any noise from them, like the sound i here under truck. anybody got any ideas for me to check??? thanks

check torque converter bolts ? flexplate cracked ?

flexplate bolts tight?

got the lock washers on the bolts?

odd things happen

bolts come loose

flexplates will crack

had it happen on many, and many times over the years.

I'd lean toward the torque convertor bolts or possibly a loose starter. But some diagnosis of the vehicle first hand is the only way to narrow it down for sure.

yea your right. i would be able to hear it coming from behind flywheel cover, if i got under with the old screw driver to ear method and let someone idle it up to i hear sound. i did it once with the naked ear and the loadest concentration was coming from right muffler, maybe something inside has vibrated loose??? i had to replace hangers the other day so the mufflers have been hanging slightly and rubbing frame little. just don't think thats the problem,(that would be to lucky for me..lol) thanks for your help

i will check all that ya'll have said, i gotta get the sound fixed before its something big.

yea it can be alot of things the other post are all over it.so i would check those things and also check harmonic balancer and check the motor mounts incase its flexing making something rub.but if its doing it at idle also you really need to check the starter /flywheel/ and toqure bolts.hope this helps. did you pull the drive shaft a phisically check the u joints. cole

Things do come loose inside catalytic convertors and mufflers..then they ratle with no apparant consistancy...A good way to check those is to shut the truck off, and lay underneath and hit the pipes, mufflers, etc sharply with the heel of your hand or a soft rubber mallet..Then listen for a rattle that sounds the same. That's how my next door neighbor ,(muffler shop), checks for rattles in the exhaust system...Those heat shields come loose too, and rattle at certain RPMs sometimes.

Just a thought.

Later, mikey
