street carb choice - 350

I've got a 350 in my '64 gmc truck, which I use in the city for work & such. Bought it last summer with a holley 4160 in it. Recently I've been having problems with it - it stalls suddenly sometimes, perhaps the needle is stuck or something.

I suppose it needs to be rebuilt, which sounds interesting (though I've never done it), but I'm also considering getting another carb which might be more friendly to my general-purpose needs (and might be more fuel efficient!)

. Someone suggested a quadrajet to me, but I'm not sure what that is - is it a brand name or a style? Is it a general term for a four-barrel?

I'm also curious about edelbrock - i've been reading these posts, and i hear a lot about the Edel 600. Is this good for "normal" use?

I also read something about considering the difference in primary and secondary sizes... small primaries with big secondaries being better for fuel consumption or something.

Are there any good websites for this kind of research? (perhaps I should just do some google footwork for that one.)

thanks very much!

I think a Quadrajet would best serve your needs, they came on millions of GM vehicles from the 60`s to the 80`s, Q-jets are made by Rochester, a Division of General Motors. they have small primaries for good cruising and efficiantcy and huge secondaries when more power is needed. Edelbrock also makes these, as for your holley it`s a breeze to rebuild.

thanks. I think I'll do some looking around for a quadrajet that is compatible w/my truck. Any opinions on the edelbrock quadrajet? (i think i was looking at #1904) There's lots of quads on ebay and such but I'm not sure I want to go messin with more potential problems, just like to get the fella working again. So I was thinking of a new edelbrock...

And in any case I think I'll order a rebuild kit for my holley anyway. I'm kinda looking forward to taking it apart and rebuilding it....

....and then writing a couple of posts to hotrodders when I screw it up!

thanks again!

I've got a Rochester Q-Jet on my truck (350) and I sure don't have any complaints! I'm getting really good mileage, too.

I *hear* the Edelbrock Q-Jet is better than Rochester, though I wouldn't know ... but if I was buying a new one, I think I'd go for an Edelbrock.

Any comments from anyone about the differences between Rochester & Edelbrock? Or is that a loaded question? <img src="graemlins/boxing.gif" border="0" alt="[boxing]" />

if ur thinking about getting an edelbrock q jet then the suggested carb for ur truck would be the q jet carb with the divorced style choke #1901. Brand new itll run u about $753.95 dollars it replaces stock Rochester Quadrajets and they are compatible with all stock linkage and components for the year listed.
