True Chevotion

Greetings from the other side of the world. Yes, street legal dragsters do ( or did) exist. This one was built here in New Zealand in 1970 ! Unlike the majority of others built, this one was a true 'rail ' style rather than an extended length T bucket. Only ran a 283 chev but was still a wild creation for its time. Sadly no longer around......

I got to run my track T at the Wednesday night "run which you brought" at the Sacramento Raceway about two years ago. The reason I ran on that particular night as I heard through the grapevine that their scales were broken. Sure enough I arrived there the tech inspector asked me what my car weighed. I told him about 660 pounds lighter than it actually weighed. And he bought it. He then asked how much horsepower I was producing, I nonchalantly told him about 90 hp less than what it was in fact producing. He crunched some numbers, and told me I was going to be one of those borderline cases, he figured me for a mid-12 second run. What he meant by borderline, as they draw line about in that speed range of not allowing you to run. But he looked at me and told me since I was older and a mature person he would let me run. Also because of the time that he figured my car would do, he told me there would be nobody else in the other lane. That was fine with me. When I staged I avoided the water box and then at the lights took off without dumping the clutch as I didn't want to break anything. For the run I didn't speed shift for the same reason didn't want to break anything. Ran a 10.8 at 132 mph and was promptly given a copy of the NHRA rules for 8.99 through 9.99 cars. Needless to say I'm not about to do all that to my track-t.

I was beside a street legal rail in Oceanside, California in the sixties, but was a two seater, very cool car.

I'd give my only remaining eye tooth to have our old Monza funny car as a street legal rod. At first I though this was it.

in my stomping grounds of North Texas, back in the mid to late 70's Mike Minette built this street dragster here shown at a local indoor car show from that time frame, I would see it every now and then cruising Forest Lane which was the Main Drag for cruising in Dallas then ..

then Bill Wendt had a cool street Fuel Altered about that same time I think that ran around this area also ..
