Streetbeasts lawsuit: proposal for parts auctions

I'm posting here to hammer out the final details for a parts auction to help fight the frivolous lawsuit filed by Streetbeasts over the wiki article we wrote. This was something we've been discussing among the moderators, and I know that xxllmm4 also brought it up in this thread. A bunch of people have already volunteered parts to auction off, and we're ready to push forward on this idea.

Here's the rough proposal:

--We'll use a new forum, dedicated to automotive parts auctions.

--When someone wants to auction a part, they'll simply start a new thread, with a description of the part, photos, and what percentage they'd like to donate to the fund (minimum 50%).

--To bid on a part, people can simply post their bid amount in the auction thread.

--The auctions stop after 2 weeks, at which point the auction thread is closed. The winning bidder pays the winning bid to Hotrodders.com (by PayPal or check). He then contacts the auction-holder to arrange shipment. The winning bidder pays shipping.

--Any leftover funds will go to the establishment of a Free Speech Fund to protect against any future attacks on Hotrodders.com administration or members.

Ideas? Feedback?

E-Bay is a great place to sell this stuff and proceeds can be sent directly to Jon via paypal. You can even make public the reasons and where the proceeds are going on your auction page, we can get some serious attention through e-bay auctions too and there is no overhead for Jon!

Jon, my take on your post is you going to run the auctions here on the HR forums? open only to those who frequent the boards? Yes? no?

If yes, I think it is way too restrictive and you'll loose too many good bidders.

I too feel that eBay would be the best for max voters and max bucks.

Can you elaborate on your ideas some?

Mark

I think that we should allow people who want to put their parts on ebay start an auction thread with a link to the auction, and use Cole's suggestion about stating the reason by putting a link to the free speech fund.
Once the link is live, it can be tracked after the sale to make sure that the specified 50% minimum percentage of the final sale amount goes to the fund, to prevent any seller fraud. (there will always be opportunists)

I did a trial ebay auction of some headlights a few weeks ago, saying the proceeds would get donated here....It had 105 views, (and no buyers..I have a pox ), but I'll bet at least a few clicked the link to the streetbeast page on this website.

That auction is over, but those lights will be the first parts that I'll put up when we actually start the auction forum.

The exposure for HR.com and the cause would increase, as would the possibility of actually selling the part.

Later, mikey

I dont know if this would be the correct thread to suggest this but..what about someone making Tshirts up and selling for the cause?

I'd buy at least a few of em myself, something on the shirt about this website and the cause for freedom of speech in it...????

Agreed on this, that's the best way to balance using ebay (or any other auction sites) and this site as well.
