Strut suspension

I was wondering if any one had ever used a strut type suspension on the rear of a rod. i have been thinking, the strut with spring is for the most part like a coilover shock. Any thoughts? I have a 66 bug i am building from swap meet/wrecking yard parts. Gonna run a BBC, a tube or i-beam up front, and most likely ladder bars on the rear, the car is going to weigh around 2000 lbs, so what do yall think about a rear strut in place of expensive *** coilovers?

Some "Big" GM FWD cars used strut rear suspensions.

Allante, Riviera, and most of the FWD cadillacs from the mid-80s to the late 90s, IIRC.

Of course, they weren't powering the wheels through them...

Also the Fiero, IIRC, had a strut rear that was powered since it was mid-engine. Might want to see how GM engineered that for your bug. If the wheelbase is similar, you may be able to use parts off a Fiero to implement what you have in mind.

Just throwing out some suggestions...

I would suggest a different direction. Take a look at the bottom of this page:

You could consider the Porsche to be a "rich cousin" of your Beetle, so this Toronado swap is certainly not out of the question.

will most likely end up with a good set of used coilovers, just was seeing what other thought of struts on the rear. Thanks, RacerJ
