Stubborn primer- OEM 1954 GM(?)
 
Hey guys, I'm in the process of stripping and prepping the body on my 54 Belair. What's left of the paint (original? I think?) has been coming off pretty easily, but anywhere there is still primer (also original?) its been pretty much laughing at everything I've been throwing at it, even aircraft stripper. Anybody know what this stuff could be? I've heard rumors that in the late 40's-50's GM started playing with early epoxy primers and this stuff definitely seems like it could be. I'm planning on doing the entire body in epoxy primer anyways, so can I just leave whatever is left on there and go right over it, or should I really get every inch of the car down to bare metal?

fyi the stuff in question is like a red-brown oxide color, can get pics if it helps at all

Sounds just like Dupont Preparakote enamel primer, was great stuff but I don't think it's available any longer. Its an un-catylized enamel thats pushing 60 years old, i would suggest removing ALL of it.

Wear a decent respirator and protection, very likely has heavy metals in it.

Hi,AWLGRIP haqd a primer,i believe the number is 60W49,it cured so hard it was ALMPOST impossible to sand it,if,you got a rum it was a B---H !!,i dont know how it was to strip it,i never tried........

LOL that old lacquer primer is a bear to get off.
it's a lot of work but heres what you do,,,get a pile of cloth rags and soak then with lacquer thinner (get a 5 gal bucket of thinner) Pile the wet rags on 24"x24" area and keeping them wet.slide the pile over and useing a razor scraper scrape that crap off easy while its soft ,move fast because it'll start drying and get harder and harder to get off, slide the pile of wet rags over and continue you'll get the hang of it fast....You can also sand it of with 40 grit da but an 8" da (mud hog) works better but the paper is expensive, it takes longer and it makes a heck of a mess...try the lacquer thinner first...wear rubber gloves thinner soaks through your skin...

A pile of rags soaked in lacquer thinner? Sounds like a fire waiting to happen.

Well I wouldnt be welding at the same time. everything in this biz is flamable but I be more concerned about the thinner soaking through the skin than a fire...
But then again there are those who do some monu"mentally" stupid stuff.

Not in my shop.....its not big enough for a dedicated blasting booth...and I dont trust any one else to do it, so ....screwed again...Plus 95% of everything I do is a running car so its not even an option...

Thanks for the replies guys, I had never heard of Preparakote maybe thats what it is? I dunno... I'm gonna give the lacquer thinner trick a shot and see what happens. Blasting is next stop after that I guess

I'll post back in a couple days after I get a chance to mess with it

The preparakote that I used was typically white. I don't know what other colors it came in. It seems that most oem primers have always been the red color.
