we have a plane Jane 67 cougar, with351W with a automatic tranny (original i believe) . to our surprise when we went to move it wouldn't move, so we pushed it onto a tow dolly, put it in Neutral, and towed it at 25 MPH down a back road 4 miles to our new house. when we got there and unloaded it and we added ATF and it started moving, great! it was acting like a wheel was locking up feeling (weird) then pulled it up the driveway and tossed it into Park.

well, heres the oddity, it moves through the gears fine, but its in Drive. put it in reverse, its still in drive. what the heck would cause this :crazy: i cannot check fluid because its trying to go in drive, wont engage park :think: we checked all linkage etc all is fine.

from what your explaining, the forward clutches are welded together. time for it to get a rebuild.

it drove perfectly fine after a long sit, then this happened just trying to fire it up and move 4 miles, what would cause this? would too much fluid level cause it?

no, usually trying to move it without enough fluid or towing it without unhooking the driveshaft.

For those of you who dont know;

Unhooking the driveshaft (probably) would have prevented this. Do NOT put your car on a dolly and tow with the driveshaft in. Some people have done this and gotten away with it. Me? if its just not worth the 20min to pull the D/S, dont buy the car

Need to determine which automatic it is ... a C4 or a cast iron case automatic.

Cast iron trans may have rear pump that is turned by drive shaft, although I doubt it. These trans also suffered with linkage troubles internally. Manual valve could come loose and the trans usually slipped into reverse, but this one may be in "drive"

i am pretty sure its C4, if thats what it is (il double check) what do i do to determine whats wrong? career mechanic but never been an automatic tranny guy really, but pretty sure i can work through it.
