Stuck Valve Stem Locks

While I've got my 350 apart, I figured I would replace the valve stem seals and clean the valves just for giggles.

Went to Autozone, got a spring compressor, the small, overhead type, and it worked but I can't get the darn locks out of the retainers. I compress the spring and it just pulls up away from the head, without popping the locks loose.

Any ideas? I've looked and looked for a c-clamp style compressor but no luck.

Just give it a rap on top with a brass or rubber hammer and the retainer should pop down and allow you to remove the locks. Yo can put a rag between teh valve and the bechh to keep it from moving.

Yep, you got to crack the locks loose from the tight fit in the retainer. Go through and smack each retainer with a mallet before you try to compress the spring.

Use can also use a large socket over the tops of the retainers if you want to avoid shooting them all over the shop. The socket will catch them if they actually come out (sometimes just one will pop out, leaving the other to deal with- but it will be loose, at least). The socket also keeps from hitting directly on the valve tip- the force is directed into the retainer/spring and not the valve itself.

If you don't use a socket, you don't have to wail on them- the idea isn't to drive the valve into a piston! lol
