Stupid easy question... dash light

I feel really stupid for asking this question but I am a nOOb when it comes to my 75 Monte Carlo. There's a dummy light on the dash that says 'Gen'. What is that? I got the oil pressure and coolant dummies, but what is that? I'm almost thinking alternator for some reason. Please shed some light on this idiot. Thanks everyone!

Before alternators, there were generators, but that change happened in the '60s. Your car should have an alternator in it.

I had a '73 Monte with a volt meter. That light won't go on until the battery is fully dead.

It is the idiot light for the alternator- aka AC generator.

Thanks for the responses. Figured it was that. Was weird because it was coming on very faintly when backing the Monte into the garage the other day, but not while idling. Haven't taken it on the road yet, but found it weird to be only when backing up. Going to hook a voltmeter up to it this week and see what's going on

Should probably get the alt tested anyways since I don't know how old it is.

My Cadillac did that too. It turned out that I had a blown fuse. Once I replaced it, the problem was solved. Why it happened? I have no idea. But it never happened again.
