Stupid Math Professor...

Hey all,

So I'm taking Calculus I at the community college I attend. I've been doing great in all my other classes im taking (chemistry, pyschology, economics), but not so great in my math class. I have a low D in the class right now, and the bad part is , im not in the minority. About 3/4 or more of the class has a C- or lower. The professor is pretty good at lecturing, but when it comes to the test, the questions look nothing like what we went over. So I'm going to have to meet with him tomorrow to ask whether I should drop the class or not, because he hasnt mentioned any kind of curve for the class. Have any of you encountered situations like this?

Back in college we used to have classes called "weeder" classes. Physics 1 and 2 fit in to this, Organic chemistry 1 and 2, inorganic 1 and 2, biochemistry and physical chemistry, as well as the first two calc classes. These classes were all made exceptionally hard to weed out a lot of the lower classmen who didn't have what it takes to be a medical student (you'll notice about 90% of incoming freshmen say "I want to be a doctor!" The university works hard to make sure only those who are really driven get there).

Most of the time a professor is not going to let 3/4 of his class fail. What I have noticed, however, is that students with poor work ethics always tend to stick together and commiserate failures. Don't worry about what 10% 50% or 90% of the other people in that class are doing, worry about your butt and do what you think you need to do to make sure your GPA is where you want it to be when you graduate. Honestly and truly, there's not a whole lot else that matters in undergrad. GPA is priority #1 always without exception.

I've had a few 300 level classes where what was discussed in class covered about 10% of what was on the test - the other 90% came from what was in the book. All the instructor would say as far as the book goes was what chapters he was going over.

I had a class almost identical to this but it was just freshman algebra. We started with about thirty folks and they just kept dropping out. I asked the Prof. if I should drop and he told me to just keep trying. We had about six or seven of us that took the final. Can you imagine my surprise when grades came and I had an A? I went to see him the next semester and he said that he gave each of us that stuck with it an A. Looking back, he really did teach me algebra, just not in the conventional way I was used to. Like the earlier advice, GPA, GPA, GPA. Good luck, David

The professor makes or breaks the class. Find out what you can about other professors, there is probably more than one calculus teacher. Sounds like you got the hard one.

Stupid professor?? I bet he passed Calc........

I'd talk with him about HOW TO PASS, not how to drop. You may get farther.

I just got done laughing my A** off as I cannot relate.

Math was easy and did not have to work hard at it at all, I loved those classes.

To this day can't figure out what they are talking about between a verb and a noun.

Funny how math is simple for some and a heart attack for others.

I can do numbers in my head that most people cannot do with a calculator yet I cannot write at fourth grade level????

I say we change the English language to symbols!

Well I don't know what your goals are or what your GPA is already like, but if you plan on going to grad school and your GPA is important to you, "passing" the class is not good enough. If the professor kind of bargains with you and tells you he thinks you can ride through on a C- or something, if it were me I'd tell him I'd rather drop and start over. Passing a class is not enough, and believe it or not a couple of withdrawls on a transcript look much better than a spattering of C- grades, especially when they come from 4 credit classes!

Me too. Derivatives/integrals of transcendental trig functions give me nightmares. At least I'm keeping a cumulative 3.65 GPA

thanks for the replies everyone. Apparently I'm not the only one not doing so well.... everyone in the class was talking yesterday, and everyone in there said they were not doing well. So i dont think it is just me, because normally I'm pretty good at math, but this guy is just really tough.

Why not drop the class and over the summer take that class at a local community college where it won't be on your records.
Than next year take the class at your college.
2nd time is a charm!

Is the teacher a woman? If so maybe you could sleep with her.
Or sleep with the Dean's wife to.
