Did you have to take them apart and clean them all out?
I had my machinist rebuild the heads replace 4 valves, as the one on that cylinder were done, as you can see the valve heads in the debris pile.
I washed every part left, intake manifold, oil lines for the turbo and cam advance solenoids,exhaust...etc. any place that debris could go.
It looks like a plane crash

Did you find out what caused it to blow??

I had a Sube RX Turbo back in the late 80's and the paper thin gasket between the intake and the RH head let go at ~35,000 miles, causing it to fill with water as it is a common gasket. I didn't blow that engine, only that gasket and the head gasket - both of which I replaced with Fel-Pros which were much superior to the OEMs. That car finally died with never another engine problem at over 225,000 miles (the dash caught fire and burned most of the interior).

What I do recall is that I never had nor have since worked on such a nasty engine as far as space to get wrenches in to remove fasteners

Its easier to just yank the motor out. Of course the turbo model is more involved.
I think it is just a problem that turbo subarus are having, they seemed willing to help pick up the tab (fuji heavy industries). Subaru is giving this customer 2000 bucks towards his bill.
It dropped a valve and the guy kept driving and destroyed it. It seems to be a problem with the valves breaking off. I was searching for a used engine ( to help the guy keep the price down) and a few yards I spoke with said they had a few of these with similar problems. Seems the drivers side was the one that fails. I looked at the exhaust setup. The exhaust flows across the front of the motor from the drivers side to the passenger side where it "Y s" into the passenger side. Then up to the turbo. It looked like the manifold was hot at the place where the 2 came together. My take on it is that excess heat is backing upon the drivers side and causing the valves to stretch and then break.

I've merged the two threads, sorry if there's any confusion.
