substrate colors

these are the rules of thumb that professional painters go by.
bright colors ( reds or oranges ) or light colors go over a white base.
medium colors go over a gray base .
dark colors over a black base.

if using a 2nd line paint plan on extra paint as they do not cover as well . they don't sell it cheaper just because they like you. it is designed for collision and repair work where cost are important but warranty is not. cutting corners on paint supplies is just foolish. you've already cut the labor and profit by doing your own. if 100 bucks in materials is going to break you sell the car, your in the wrong hobby there has been a lot of bad info given on this subject so pick you knowledge base carefully and do your homework.

That's Good Advice Shine.

I just came across this chart from Glasurit I thought I'd pass along, It pretty well just reinforces what you said. But they do also recommend dark undercoats for your medium metallic silvers.
