Post suggestions on a 305

Has anyone used a 305 chevy in their street rod? Was it low on power or a decent motor? Nothing beats cubic inch, but it seems chevy used this motor alot. The factory specs only say about 150-160hp. Would an aftermarket cam bring up those numbers? I have a set of 350 heads ready to go, would putting them on a 305 make it worse(76cc chamber) or breathe better?

the member chevyelc81 he would definitely be able to answer you r question next time hes on he had an 81 el camino with a 305 in it. That thing had a pretty big cam in it the heads were redone he had a intake and 600 carb on it i do believe with 1.5 or 6 ratio rocker arms and well lets just say that with all the work he put into it he still lost to a 1990 crown vic stock sorry but in my opinion the 305 for chevy are real dogs for the little bit more money might as well just go to a 350 plus you can do more to a 350 as well and youll be happier in the end anyways

Just to answer your question on the heads it would kill your power 305 heads are 58cc just dont go over board on your cam but I agree with the other fellas go with the 350 if posible

definitely don't use the 350(76cc) heads on the 305, it will lower your compression way to much(8:1). 58cc will yeild about 9.5:1,these are ruff figures but i would go with a bit more cubes and use the 305 for parts.i herd the 305 was intruduced for better economy due to the long-ish stroke of the 350 but with a smaller bore .....i would say a 305 would be more of a torquer for its size than a rever.ive also herd of 400hp 305's but then your getting into expensive stuff ,just my feelings tho.

Had a 305 in my 57 chevy pick-up and it wouldn't pick-up. Ended up building a 350 now it's a fast pick -up. Bud

i'm currently running a chevy 305 in my pontiac
g-body. compared to a chevy 350 or other larger
small blocks it's a bit anemic; however, you can coax some immpressive numbers out of it. car craft did a build of one that registered around
325hp!! they used readily available parts, kept costs down and set up to be a reliable daily driver. the build up went like this: 750 demon carb, edelbrock performer intake, comp xtreme energy cam (218/224 duration at 0.050, .462/.469 lift, 110 deg LS) and finally L31 Vortec cast iron heads from GM. the vortec heads reguire a different intake (edlebrock super victor), sell aligning roller rockers and center boalt valve covers. the heads are dirt cheap though about 400 bucks assembled. this is what i plan on doing to my 305. its not a street pounder like some other street engines but it's got some moxy and can do the dance with all rice rockets and some mustangs.
if you plan on daily driving your car then this is not a bad way to go cause it gets good mileage compared to a 350 or 400.
