I am building a 50 chevy P/U I am almost finished with the 53 so i will be starting soon ,would like to get opinions and tips Before i start and do something stupid, <does any one have any experiance or suggestions for installing these doors .I want these before i chop the top but thats another story.

One very important part is to get the hinge pin as close as you can to the skin of the panel it is mounted behind. Using the stock hinges would be perfect actually, I used 55 Ford F-100 hinges when I did it to a VW bug and they worked great.

It is a pretty complicated project, making the hinges so they are perfectly aligned with one an other is one key. You can do this by bolting a piece of rectangular tubing to the hinge part that will be bolting to the door. With the two hinges mounted to the tube like this you can make your mounts in the cab all the while the hinges are sort of "one" and will remain so until they are bolted to the cab and then remove the tube and make the mounts on the door.

With the stock hinges you would simply mount them exactly as they are on the front so your door will have the hinges mounted to the inside like the front leaving room for the window channel.

Personally I think the time is better spent on other details that you see all the time instead of something that is only seen for a few seconds when you get in and out.

I did mine using stock components. Look at the build thread on my '48 Chev extended cab. Using an extra set of complete hinge pillars, move the driver's side to the back of the passenger door frame and vise versa for the other side. Cut the outer door skins away from the inner. NOT THE SAME AS I DID IN THE PICTURE!!! Cut the inner portion above the upper hinge and then down below the inner door handle and window crank. I had to redo that section after posting that picture. By cutting it like this the upper 1/4 of it stays stock so your door handle location and window crank does not change. Then swap the inner halves of the doors from one side to the other and weld back onto the outer skin.

It sounds confusing, but not once you see it. I have pictures of this that I will try to post in the next few days.

Hope it helps.[/QUOTE..Thanks for the pictures and information you are doing good work ,I was thinking of a different direction i located a panel with windows ,shorter than a surburban ,my thought was cut off rear af panel just behind rear door and graft rear of cab from pickup ,that would give me a pick uo with four full doors ,i have a 90- surburban for the frame ,so i can use full size bed,think might be less labor intensive , I would like to have diesel ,but will probably stay wiyh big block chevy thanks again for help,send more pictures as you progress..
