Suicide Doors for 1974 VW Bug?

I've recently bought an older VW Bug, in good mechanical and electrical condition but with lousy paint and a stripped interior. I'd like to give it suicide doors. It has (like all VW Bugs of its age) exposed hinges, almost rectangular doors (not counting the top section) and is a two-door, so I don't have to worry as much about a weak center post. I'd rather use the current hinges if I can, rather than spending $200-1500 for aftermarket hinges. I'm an OK welder, but I've never tried anything quite like this before. Any advice?

One other thing - should I try to use the latches that are already on it, or look for a different type of latch? I'd like to keep it fairly stock looking, but I expect I can interface the current doorhandles with whichever latch I get.

One of the problems I've seen with suicide doors on Bugs is that if you do not use the right hinge geometry, the door hits the body before it is all the way open. But if you are using the stock hinges, that should not be a problem, because they have the pivot point outside of the door.

I did suicide doors on a Bug once, used 55 Ford F-100 hinges, worked like a charm. But I have to tell you, it is a big project. Using the stock hinges would be a lot easier, that is for sure.

I don't suppose you have any pictures of your project, either during the build or after completion? I'd love to see details of how you did this.

suicide doors

i've heard that you use the left side door hinges on the right side of the bug door jamb. then visa versa.

Resurrecting a 2 and a half year old thread. This car is either finished, or junked.
