Anybody ever convert a 79 Ford P.U. to suicide doors. I tried a standard kit and it has the doors hitting the body before they start to open. The geometry is all wrong for the body. Any suggestions? I imagine any of the mid 60's G.M. trucks would have the same problem.
Do a search on this board on suicide doors. Been discussed in detail. Your problem is that the hinge pin center is too far from the 90deg bend between the body panel and the door jamb. The hinge pivot must be as close to that bend as possible to avoid the interference you are experiencing.
Willys, it isn't how close you get the pin to the corner of the gap, it is more how close you get the pin to the skin of the adjacent panel. In my drawing in this link I may have the pin up next to the gap as your saying, but it would make no difference to speak of if the pin were away from that gap, as long as it was against the skin. At that point the door will go OUT before it goes back closing the gap, THAT is the key. I believe this is right, correct me if I am wrong.
You are 100% correct. Near the skin is the only for-sure must for non-interference. However, near as possible to the door jamb is also desirable because it results in the smallest hinge arm possible. The farther away from the door jamb, the longer radius of the arc of the hinge needs to be.
