Sulfuric Battery Acid Uses
Anyone know what you can do with sulfuric acid?
I recently was given 5 gals of it. And I dont know what to do with it. Will it clean nut & bolts? Will it clean concrete? Just lookin for some input. Last edited by Holder350 : 04-05-2008 at 08:36 AM. |

I have heard you can clean your face with it and you will not have a problem with pimples anymore.

You can use it to make nuts and bolts weak and brittle and you can also use it to make concrete soft and crumbly! Seriously don't use it for either because what it will do to both is no joke.
I bet whoever gave it to you was happy to be rid of it! |

This is nasty stuff. Very caustic, the fumes can be explosive, etc. It's not something you want sitting around, especially in such a large quantity. Without a purpose for it, someone was just pawning off a liability when they gave it to you. You might be able to find a battery store that can use it. Few lead-acid batteries are shipped to the retailers dry anymore but most motorcycle batteries still are. Otherwise, your best bet would be to take it to a center where hazardous chemicals are safely disposed of.

Welp...today or tomorrow, I'm gonna delude it down about 1 to 3 with water.
put it in a sprayer and see what it'll do for my concrete then wash the concrete like I normally do, I think the added water will neutralize to remaining acid. (may but some baking soda or ammonia in my soap watter tho) I read up on using it for bolts and it true.....that is NOT a good idea. Had a guy tell me that he did some hardware like that and the bolts instead of "breaking" SHATTERED! LOL BTW weirdest "acid" story I'v heard. - Guy working in a lawn mower shop has a guy come in with a seized motor, the rod had seized on the crank, they get the rod off and this guy will buy a rod but not a crank.......so they EAT the aluminum off the crank with muriatic acid, hit it with some Emory and throw it back together. He said it was running when it left... Last edited by Holder350 : 04-05-2008 at 08:36 AM. |

You are about to ruin your concrete if you are not very careful. A diluted acid solution is used to clean brick and to remove concrete from surfaces that can take the acid and to etch concrete floors prior to painting or other surface coatings but to use as a concrete floor cleaner? The acid will soak into the concrete and you will probably end up with a crumbly and flaking surface if the solution is too strong. I don't know what you are trying to clean from the floor but if it is oil you need a solvent as the acid will have little effect on that and it does not actually clean the floor it DISSOLVES it so instead of just cleaning you will be removing some of it. The problem is the acid will not stop when you finish and rinse it off, it will soak into the floor and continue the damage until it is neutralized by the concrete, on an oily floor you could end up with an unevenly etched surface. If you are trying to clean a stained floor there are strong detergent solutions out there that are a heck of a lot better and safer for your concrete than Sulfuric Acid!
Muriatic acid is Hydrochloric acid, Muriatic is just the old traditional name for the same thing and to soak a cast iron crankshaft in Hydrochloric acid is just...well you know. Acid uses have been discussed here several times and both Sulfuric and Hydrochloric (Muriatic) have been around for hundreds of years and their properties are well known so if their use as a rust remover or floor cleaner was a good idea they would be commonly used for the purpose. Both ARE used for rust and concrete but the use can be a bit tricky and using Sulfuric Acid as a general cleaner for a seasoned concrete floor cleaner just don't seem like a very good idea. |

Water does not NEUTRALIZE acid, it simply dilutes it and there is a major difference! There would be no need to add anything to the rinse water since the lime in the concrete will do the same thing as the baking soda and the concrete itself will neutralize the acid. The problem is the "neutralized" acid will be soaked into the concrete so you will have a soft surface left however deep the acid goes before it ceases to work. As I said Acid solutions are used on concrete all the time as an etch and if done properly that is OK but to use as a general concrete cleaner on a seasoned floor may not be a very good idea. |

I don't know what you could use the acid for. Apparently not for cleaning concrete. BUT if you really want to dilute it, consider this: I remember my science teacher saying that adding water to acid could cause a dangerous reaction that could blow up. If you want to safely dilute acid, add the acid to the water. |

Killed acid is used for concrete cleaning. Yes, I know how to kill acid but won't contribute to stupidity. Nothing personal, don't get hot. Five gallons of hydrochloric acid has no earthly use for an individual. Take it to a licensed disposal site and get rid of it.
